Please tell us about how you are associated with or involved in the cowboy church/ministry community.
I am a Christian Cowboy and I work with disabled Cowboys mostly with spinal and/or head injuries encouraging them and helping them realize their potential despite their injuries. When Shawn Dubie of Cheyenne, Wyoming, was injured at the Greeley Stampede and in coma, I drove over 40,000 in one year to read to him, hold his hand when he cried, laugh with him when he laughed, and encourage him when he was discouraged. Though I knew Shawn for only a short time before he was injured, staff assumed I was his brother or a close friend. "No," I'd tell them, "Just friends from the rodeo circuit." This always called for the obvious question, “Why?!” to wit I tell folks, “I’m just a Christian. And this is what God expects of us; to live and minister by example.” When Shawn was in coma, his friends did not want to visit him because they were not comfortable doing so. I don’t blame them because it is not easy visiting someone in coma or seriously injured. It is outside the normal “comfort zone” of most folks. For me it is simply a Spiritual gift. One night while reading to Shawn, I noticed a head sticking in the door. It was one of a couple dozen College Rodeo Cowboys and Cowgirls come to visit Shawn. They were not prepared for what they found and they were very uncomfortable. “Just say ‘Hell-o,” I told them. The tension was so thick a chainsaw couldn’t cut it so I handed the first cowboy surrounding the bed the book I had been reading to Shawn and told him to just read to him. Each one read in turn and for a couple hours we all helped Shawn just by our presence. You see, folks in coma have times when they’re “awake” and sleeping. They are aware when people visit and the do hear what you say. For Shawn it was like having a party. Before we left that evening, we joined in prayer for Shawn. Long ago I learned God uses us as He will to minister to others. That evening 20 some Cowboys and Cowgirls were ministered to along with my best friend, Shawn. It is written in John 6:44, "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” We all minister in one way or another but God does the calling. It is our example that people see and our actions that preach the Word of either righteousness or self-righteousness. Never forget: You can lead a horse to water but aside from drowning it, that’s about it. You cannot force it to drink. But if you lead that horse to water with gentleness and kindness, it will drink. So it is with a personal ministry. So in a nutshell, that is my ministry.
