Echoes From the Campfire:  Jan 26

"There would be signs, if a man could read them."

               --Luke Short  (Ramrod)

"He replied, 'When evening comes, you say, "It will be fair weather, for the sky is red," and in the morning, "Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast." You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.'"

Echoes From the Campfire:  Jan 25

"As we followed the trail that wound up and into the heart of these rounded hills and every nearer to the purple mountains, the morning breeze swept down to meet us, bearing a thousand scents, and filling us with its own fresh life.  One can know the quickening joyousness of these foothill breezes only after he has drunk with wide-open mouth, deep and full of them."
               --Ralph Connor  (The Sky Pilot)

"He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow."

     "It's a fact that you're gettin' older.
Man, don't it seem like the winters are colder,
You get tired so easy, and you can't stand the heat.
That's just the ol' cowboy blues."

"I will be the same until your old age, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will bear and save you."

As I continue to plant a Cowboy Church in Ocala, I have spent time with the Transport For Christ ministry group at the Chapel at the Pilot truckstop Southside of 326. These modern Cowboys are hungry for the word, and support. If there is a truckstop in your area no not miss this Bunkhouse of Cowboys who would love to connect to pastor and fellowship in Christ.

People long for satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment.  No one likes to think that he has led an insignificant life; yet many do not even have a clue as to what fulfillment really is.  People reach out and attempt to succeed in the things they really believe they can do; however, very few will make personal goals a challenge, something them may fail at in trying to attain.

Fulfillment is when you have placed God at the center of your life, making your faith in Him, and allowing the Holy Spirit to move freely in your life.  Then, He will stretch you, challenge you, bring tests to strengthen your character and shape your faith.  David wrote, "LORD, You have assigned me my portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure."  (Psalm 16:5)

"You hang around bad people, bad things happen."
               --L.H. Thomson

I began to ponder, and figured that life is full of skunks--polecats they are called.  That is not a very complimentary term.  But in this life, if you haven't already come across some you will.  Life is full of polecats.  They range from that person sitting next to you on a plane or bus that hasn't a notion what hygiene is let alone a tube of deodorant down to that thug who hangs on the perimeter of evil, attracting its smell and then letting it permeate wherever he walks.
They don't really strike fear into anyone, but they bring a wariness whenever they are seen.  I was camping one time in the Smokies and while enjoying an evening around the campfire listening to folks tell yarns someone suddenly blurted out.  "Nobody move, there's a skunk under the chair."  A little black and white varmint caused some considerable consternation for a few minutes in that camp.  In its own due time he moved along.
Some folk seem to be like that.  Wherever they go there is an aroma.  No, it's not one of murder, evil, or mayhem.  It's not one of grand larceny, however, they will do plenty of picking around a camp--petty larceny.  And one thing for sure you can tell if they have been around.  They can even leave their smell on you.  Some can be pretty dangerous as well for they are known to carry rabies; that can bring death.
Perhaps that the moral of this note.  Hang around polecats and sooner or later you'll smell like one.  As we go through life we might have to associate with some polecats, but your sure don't have to fellowship with them or make them a pet.  A word to the wise is hopefully sufficient.

"Boys, though toil and storms may worry us here, and cold and heat twist our bones, yet there is sweet rest beyond....  There is a place of shelter for the weary soul, where the grass and trees are always green, the sun always shines and fruit springs up on every hand, where we can camp throughout all eternity in a perfect atmosphere, where all tears are dried away, and death, pain, and sorrow never come.  BUT WE WILL HAVE TO DO SOME HARD RIDING TO REACH IT."  (Buckskin Brady, cap emphasis added)

When Jesus said that "you must be born again" he was not meaning that now life was roses, lollipops, and ice cream.  The rain falls on the just and the unjust.  Trials and woes come upon all.  However, now there is someone who walks the journey with you.  It does not mean that everything will be "fun."

In fact, Jesus warns about the "cares of the world."  Those are obstacles, temptations, or trials that can choke out the gospel that is living in our life.  Those are things that can cause us to die and lose out on the heavenly reward.  Beware when those things seem to wear on your and start to cause you woe.  There is rest for the weary, even in this life, but there will be those times of "hard riding."

"Life is always in session.  Are you always present?"  (unknown)

I don't know if any of you have done any orienteering.  I used to set up courses and run them for competition.  It can be real fun.  In our situation a person could not really become lost but he might be befuddled for a time.  If you are off just one degree you can be lost.  If you miss your compass point by one degree it might mean failure.  At the beginning of the journey it might seem as nothing, but by the end of the course you could be lost.  If it was a 203 day course it could spell disaster, or if you were in a survival situation it might even mean death.

Think of your moral compass.  It might not seem like you are off course at the beginning.  It seems right, and you continue on but an obstacle may be in your path that you didn't see, or by the end of life you are way off course.  You could be lost for eternity simply because you started off just one degree off.

"You can tell by the way that the set their horses, do the circle and rustle camp that their religion has received the proper stripe...."  (Buckskin Brady)

Our lives should be God-honoring and God-fearing, one of worship, one that is holy.  There is a story (true story) about a cowcamp.  The foreman was called "old Mike" and he was always riding a particular cowboy who was a Christian.  He would give Brady the hardest broncs to break.  He would send Brady out on the hardest, most dangerous work.  He said if Brady was successful it was "owin' to yer religion," but in case he would die his "religin'll take you through to heaven."  Most of us would complain, gripe, maybe even quite.  Then what testimony would we leave?

Brady had decisions to make while working with this crew.  He determined to follow God's Word and win out.  "I made up my mind that, by trusting God every hour for cheerfulness and grace, in order to serve my time as a true soldier of the Cross, I would accept the toughest proposition...."

Paul understood this for he fought hard, not beating the wind, but the good fight of faith.  Peter warned that the devil is stalking us to be wary of an attack.  We should not be weak-wristed, lily-livered Christians that want more of the world than they do of Christ.  Problem is that many think that life will be full of roses, but instead there is likely to be more hardship.

By the way, old Mike accepted the Lord on his deathbed and several toughen cowboys became Christians at his burial.  All due to someone who would stick it out and dare to be different.

"No hardship could seem too great, no trail too long, no mountain impassable when the vision was upon them."     (Louis L'Amour)

Once on the heavenly trail each person has their own way to make.  It most likely will not be a trail of tip-toeing through the tulips or a merry jaunt through meadows of clover.  Sure, there will probably be those wonderful lush meadows from time-to-time, but there will also be the times when the trail will be steep and rocky.  There will be brigands along the way to destroy you.  Life lessons must be learned and they must learned well, and they must be learned with the manual that the Holy Spirit has provided.  Keep that vision of heaven fixed in your soul.

Where does serving God fit into your life?  For too many "Christians" serving God is only a part-time activity.  Let me tell you that part-time faith is ineffective and weak; faith cannot be done only in the spare time.

"What does the LORD ask of you but to fear the LORD, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul."
               --Deuteronomy 10:12

When we get that one verse down we finally understand worship.  When God is not just a spare time activity and becomes an integral part of the life then, in fact, the life itself then the person has begun to worship.  These part-time "Christians" expect to much from God but they give so little of themselves and when God doesn't answer the way they want Him to answer they commonly become critical, bitter, and angry.  Listen, if you refuse to give God the proper place in your life the gap will be filled by something.

"When ignorance gets started it knows no bounds."
               --Will Rogers

"Totally without hope one cannot live.  To live without hope is to cease to live."
               --Fyodor Dostoevsky

There are many dangers with ignorance but one of the great ones is that it very often leads to arrogance.  Man thinks he can solve the problems of the world and then gloats when he thinks he has a solution that fits his agenda.  With his technology and wonderful enlightenment he thinks he can do all things and solve all problems.  Now, for a minute think of the world:  famine, disease, poverty, disasters, terrorism are a few of the problems.  He sure hasn't done a very good job with those and when he thinks he has he become smug and carries around a smirk of importance upon his enlightened face.  Then when his plans, strategies, and methods fail he looks for excuses.
It is almost paradoxical; God made man to be over the earth, yet man has failed in so many areas and that happens when he becomes greedy or sets himself as grandiose.  The Psalmist wrote, "You made him ruler over the works of Your hands; You put everything under his feet." (Psalm 8:6)  He had great hopes and plans for man, but man allowed his thinking to become dark and evil made a mess of things.
Man was given the earth and he was to use it to enrich his existence.  He must create beautiful things so he can enjoy life.  But man needs to ask "How?" can I use it to enrich me?  He must ask "What?" things can be created to enjoy life?  So much of the time he has turned to the darker side of man, and God will allow him to wander that way.
Each of us plays a part in the great scheme of God.  Oh we may not be men of state, but we have our families, our jobs.  We have our little place on earth that we can enrich, that we can enjoy.  What are you doing in that realm?  Are you a benefit or are you ignorant and arrogant?

I've been a little slow of late and neglectful to get some posts out.  I'll try to do better now that in a few days I'll be on a regular schedule.  But today I was ponderin' the followin':

If you want to enjoy life you need to look for the hidden sources of inspiration to be found along the trail of life.  They are waiting to refresh, inspire, and encourage us.  However, most folk rush through their daily tasks and have no time or desire to see and be stimulated by their discoveries.  God will allow small inspirations to pop into our lives, appreciate them.  They are the kind that you have to pick out.

"But it is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty that gives him understanding."  Job 32:8.
